Punta Arenas: Walk with Penguins on Magdalena & Marta Island

1.Walk with Penguins on Magdalena & Marta Island

★★★★★★★★★★4.6 · 611 reviews · 5 hours · from $150Our pick

Walk among Magellanic penguins and sea lions on Magdalena and Marta Islands near Punta Arenas, with guides, coffee, and wildlife.

“It was a wonderful experience! The tour was well organized and the staff was friendly and professional. The group was LARGE… about 100 people, but we were the only group on the island so it was manageable and people spread out on the walk. The boat is a pontoon boat that seats 100… Be advised that you float in the surge off of one of the islands to view the sea lions… and there are 30 minute large bus rides to and from the tour office to the boat launch… so if you get motion sickness, definitely take some meds before travel!”

Punta Arenas boat trip to Magdalena Island for a guided walk at Los Pingüinos Natural Monument, with English narration.

“The island and the penguins were great but the trip was terrible. First off since it was advertised as shore excursion we assumed that we would have transportation. Nope After having their information translated by a taxi man we found out that we needed to take a taxi to the car ferry port We did get there on time but no one was there to help us. Someone else told us what to do. The car ferry cost $50 the taxi costs $10 and we paid $230 for what????? Don't waste your money.”

“We loved our tour! It was amazing seeing the landscape and animals in the Patagonia on the drive. It is a long drive to get there, but it’s well worth it and the driver/guide made it fun! And the ferry breaks it up and it was a good experience. Penguins we’re a highlight! The park is amazing and the workers are so passionate and do incredible work. Stopped at a great place for lunch on the way back which was reasonably priced. Plenty of stops to stretch legs, see some of the oldest ranches in the region, and go to the bathroomz”

★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · 67 reviews · 14 hours · from $180

Full-day Punta Arenas trip to Tierra del Fuego, with Magellan Strait ferry, Porvenir square, San Gregorio Estancia, and king penguins.

“Honestly, the reviews of this trip do not do it justice. Of course this is a long day, penguins live in the wilderness, and therefore it takes time to get to their natural habit - it's a privilege to visit and there is a reason why we're seeing them here and not in a zoo! Atma and Hernandez were amazing with communicating the realities of the landscape and wind on Tierra del Fuego and how that might impact the timings of our trip, however everything went very smoothly. The ferry on the way there is two hours but it's comfortable and you can buy snacks and coffee, and the mini-bus…”

11.Magdalena Island Penguin Tour by Boat from Punta Arenas

★★★★★★★★★★4.7 · 62 reviews · 5 hours · from $160

Boat to Magdalena Island in the Strait of Magellan to see thousands of Magellanic penguins, plus lighthouse stops and Strait views.

“Seeing the wildlife was definitely the highlight! I felt the ticket venue and the checking in process could be improved. The tiny area where people were waiting in to check in, was sooo crowded and overflowing that when it was announced that people could begin the check in process, it was chaotic. I’m sure the overflow of people outside didn’t even realize the check in had started. The wait time for loading was long and there was no communication about where we were being taken once we were underway. Despite these shortcomings, the excursion was well worth doing! We thoroughly enjoyed watching the penguins!!”

Sandboard dunes, open-boat Humboldt penguins and sea lions, optional paragliding, and a Chilean picnic lunch along Valparaíso coast.

“We had an amazing day with Go Penguins! We started in the fish market and saw sea lions. Then we drove along the coast and learned about Chilean culture and had macha on the beach. After - we went for a hike and learned about the nature in the area. We saw the penguins after the hike. We weren't able to get on the boat because of how rough the water was - but seeing them from the rock was even better because we could take more time. After penguins, we had an amazing lunch if empanadas, pisco, wine and fruit while watching paragliding from the cliff. We finished the…”

“Everything about this tour was a 10/10. Our guide, Lautaro, made the entire experience. He was friendly, funny, informative, and so generous with his knowledge. This experience is unlike anything else you will have in Chile. I cannot recommend this tour enough. From the experience of being on the water seeing the Humboldt Penguins, to the delicious lunch (I can’t state enough how good the empanadas were. Best I had in Chile.), to the absolutely beautiful tour through Valparaiso. Do yourself a favor, if you’re on the fence about booking, JUST DO IT! You WONT be disappointed!”
